Minimum Technical Competencies

Minimum Technical Competencies (MTC) is part of the government Competent Person Scheme: a criteria for tradespeople working in domestic properties, including solar and renewable projects.

The certification proves quality standards and that the installer works within the Building Regulations requirements. Obtaining MTC can reduce the admin for a consumer, and provide them with assurance that you meet all the quality, and health and safety standards.

What is an MTC card?

An MTC Card (Mandatory Technical Competence Card) shows that an installer or construction worker has the required competence and works within Building Regulations requirements. To obtain an MTC Card, you must meet certain pre-set criteria. You will then have to pass a knowledge assessment to demonstrate competence.

How do I get an MTC card?

To get an MTC card, you need to be assessed first to make sure you meet a set of criteria.

This includes:

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Working in the relevant area for at least two out of the last five years or have a relevant NVQ.

You then have to pass a knowledge assessment to demonstrate competence.

If you don’t meet these requirements, you can either enrol on an NVQ course prior to assessment or set up a relevant structured learning plan.
